Central Catholic opened its quest for a third straight Three Rivers Athletic Conference football championship in a huge way on Friday night, pounding the visiting Lima Senior Spartans 55-0 at Gallagher Stadium.
After waiting through a 50-minute weather delay for the opening kickoff, the Fighting Irish opened the scoring in one of the most unlikely ways possible.
Central punter Sam Lee’s kick was fielded by the Spartans, who fumbled on the return. Lee recovered and returned the ball 35 yards for the score as the Irish grabbed a 7-0 lead just a minute into the game.
That started Central’s 42-point first half explosion against an overwhelmed Lima Senior squad.
“The defense played well, and we kind of had some things handed to us, and we took advantage of them,” Central coach Greg Dempsey said. “When the other team makes mistakes you’ve got to take advantage, or the mistakes really don’t matter. We did a good job there. We showed some explosiveness on offense, but we need to be a little more consistent.”
