TIFFIN — There was only a dusting of snow, but it was tough sledding for Central Catholic before it pulled away late in a Division III regional football final against Lexington on Saturday night.
The top-ranked Fighting Irish scored two second-half touchdowns to emerge with a 19-0 victory at Tiffin’s Frost-Kalnow Stadium.
“I was uncomfortable all night,” Central coach Greg Dempsey said of the hard-fought battle in poor weather conditions. “It takes some things away from you offensively, and Lexington was going to stack the box as it was. Their kids played great all night, and did a great job of tackling the football.”
Pivotal in the game were two special-teams plays by sophomore Jase Bowen, who punted Central (13-0) out of trouble with a 45-yard punt from his 12-yard line, then returned a Minutemen punt 80 yards for a touchdown for a 12-0 lead with just 28 seconds left in the third quarter.
